100% More Roach Hunting!

Finally getting a new version posted! SpiderBox now includes roach hunting. A new roach spawns whenever you catch one, so you can hunt roaches to your heart's content!

This has been quite a lot of work, and the game is still nowhere close to "finished".  The roaches don't really communicate when they've spotted you, and it's not very clear (or rewarding) when you do manage to catch one. (Audio and visual cues coming later.) There are also still some frustrating "near misses", so I still need to do some balancing of what counts as a catch or a miss.

I'm not entirely sure I like how the object transparency for things that block the spider from view works. Getting what I want it to look like will require a custom shader, and I'm not quite ready to dive into that yet (I also want some special shaders for the spider's hair, and other things, so I plan to work on all that stuff at a later time). What I have now works, and it's far better than not being able to see through walls at all.

As a reward for reading this post, here are some hints for catching roaches (all of this subject to change):

  • Roaches only see you when you move (yes, like a t-rex)
  • Roaches see further in front of them than behind them
  • The roaches will likely try to run away (directly) from you when you jump, so aim where they *will* be
  • You're more likely to succeed if you get closer and make a smaller jump, rather than a big jump from far away
  • It's nearly impossible to catch roaches on the ceiling or high on wall. I haven't decided if this is a bug (har har) or a feature.
